British Columbia is home to some of the world’s most pristine aquatic environments that provide the perfect conditions for the development of large scale sustainable commercial aqua farming operations. As such, Ahptun Seafood LP is uniquely positioned in the face of a changing marketplace.
Acquired in 1975 by Sliammon First Nation, Mermaid Oyster Producers Ltd was originally an oyster harvesting and processing plant. The operation consists of the main processing facility in Okeover Inlet, and tenures to 7 inter-tidal beach sites and 3 deep water sites.
Traditional operations have had to evolve in order to meet the demands of a changing marketplace. The ability to produce large volumes of consistently high quality product has become essential in the face of large scale operations monopolizing the shellfish industry. To meet this challenge Sliammon First Nation has teamed up with local company Ocean Protein, a leading edge aquaculture company.
By employing stringent scientific protocols, the Okeover facility has been converted into a bio-secure lab who’s primary purpose is now the rearing of oyster seed to a plantable size. Once the oysters mature they are then planted in the open water for a period of at least 2 years before being harvested and sold, mainly to international markets.
There is plenty of opportunity for substantial returns in the shellfish industry, particulary with regards to Geoduck farming. By combining the cutting edge sustainable farming techniques developed by Ocean Protein and Sliammon’s unique asset pool, both parties are positioned for a long-term successful business partnership, pioneering in the fields of aqua culture farming.
